While hurrying to get things done and enjoy more time on the weekend, it's easy to overlook proper care and cleaning of your lawn and garden sprayer. A clogged sprayer only defeats the purpose of having one in the first place. Cleaning a sprayer can sound rather tedious until you have a guide that breaks down each step. In this post, we are going to show you how to clean your lawn and garden sprayer and give it the TLC it needs.

How frequently do you clean your battery-powered garden sprayer at home? If it’s after every use, keep it up!

If not, then we recommend that you do. Why? Doing so helps prevent solution debris and other impurities from accumulating in the tank, hose, or nozzle which can cause clogging and damage.

If you have a PetraTools’ backpack sprayer, cleaning it frequently and properly is key to long-lasting use.

Guide On How To Clean Your Lawn And Garden Sprayers.

Step 1: Make Sure to Empty the Sprayer of Your Solution

If there is solution left in your tank? Empty it all out! To avoid any waste, re-apply any remaining solution to the areas you are treating to prepare the sprayer for the cleaning you’ll perform.

Step 2: Clean the Sprayer in an Area Away from Children and Pets

Children and pets are more sensitive to chemical exposure than adults, so you want to make sure you keep them away from where you will be cleaning the sprayer.

Allow the area to completely dry before letting anyone come near it.

Step 3: Wash the Sprayer with Water

After draining the garden or lawn solution, wash the inside of the tank with water.
Use a soft-bristle brush with a long handle and carefully rub the tank.
Once you feel it is thoroughly rinsed out, flip the tank over to drain any excess.
Also, spray/rinse the nozzle with water for at least one minute to wash it through to the end.

Step 4: Use Mild Soap to Completely Remove Solution Debris

Fill the tank with water again, and this time add a mild soap solution to it. Mix well until foamy.
Allow the mixture to sit in the tank for at least two hours to remove any solution left.

Step 5: Spray the Soap Solution Out

Before spraying the soap mixture out, stir it with a brush to prevent any leftover debris from sinking to the bottom of the tank.
Spray the mixture to the ground or any concrete walkway.

Step 6: Clean the Sprayer’s Attachments

Clean the sprayer nozzles, filters, and screens with soap and water.
This process ensures that the entire sprayer system is free of chemicals, not just the tank.

Step 7: Wash the Sprayer with Clean Water

The final step is to wash the attachments and the tank with water.
Make sure that they don’t have any soap left before leaving them to dry.
You might want to flip the tank over after washing to drain any water left that may still be inside.

Achieving the best clean for your sprayer is your ultimate goal, and this is where some helpful tips are extremely beneficial:

  • Clean the sprayer right after using it to avoid the hardening of solution debris in the tank, hose, or nozzle.
  • Wear liquid-resistant gloves when washing the sprayer, so your skin is safe from chemical contact.
  • Never use strong cleaners or harsh soap to wash your sprayer as aggressive chemicals can cause damage to it. Products with mild ingredients are recommended.
  • Clean the sprayer in between usage within the day, so chemicals won’t get mixed.
